Runway Pricing Explained in Plain Numbers

Runway pricing is quoted in credits, and credits are only useful once you know what a clip costs. According to runway.com/pricing in September 2026, a 5-second Gen-4.5 clip uses 60 credits. Divide your plan by that and the picture changes quickly: the $15 Standard plan buys about ten clips a month. Below we run the arithmetic for every tier, cover what happens to unused credits, and show when a flat $1 per video with no subscription is the smarter route. The four Runway plans in September 2026

Runway's official pricing page lists these tiers (monthly price, annual price in brackets):

• Free: 125 credits, one time only, not monthly.
• Standard: $15/month ($12 billed annually), 625 credits.
• Pro: $35/month ($28), 2,250 credits.
• Max: $95/month ($76), 9,500 credits. Max credits roll over for up to one month.

Cost per 5-second clip on each tier

Using 60 credits per 5-second Gen-4.5 clip:

• Free: 125 ÷ 60 = 2 clips, once.
• Standard monthly: 625 ÷ 60 ≈ 10.4 clips. $15 ÷ 10.4 ≈ $1.44 per clip. On annual billing, $12 ÷ 10.4 ≈ $1.15.
• Pro monthly: 2,250 ÷ 60 = 37.5 clips. $35 ÷ 37.5 ≈ $0.93 per clip.
• Max monthly: 9,500 ÷ 60 ≈ 158 clips. $95 ÷ 158 ≈ $0.60 per clip.

These are best-case numbers: every credit used, no rerolls. In practice most people regenerate a shot two or three times, so a Standard subscriber keeping one clip in three is paying closer to $4 per keeper.

Runway pricing vs a flat $1 per video

Runway has a wider toolset than a clip generator and a well-regarded model. We do one job: short 3-30 second clips from text or an image, in Turbo or Pro mode, with sound optional.

Break-even: when Runway wins

At $1 per video, Standard ($15) only wins if you would otherwise make more than 15 clips, but Standard gives you about 10. So for Gen-4.5 at 5 seconds, Standard is never cheaper per clip than $1. Pro breaks even at 35 clips and gives you 37.5, so it is slightly cheaper if you use nearly all of it every month. Max is clearly cheaper for heavy, steady users who need 100+ clips monthly.

Worked example: a YouTuber who needs 12 B-roll shots per video, one video a month, would pay $15 on Standard and still be short two clips. A $20 top-up here covers 20 clips, and the 8 left over carry into next month and every month after, because our credits never expire.

Heavy user or occasional creator?

If Runway is your daily tool and you use its editing features, a Pro or Max plan makes sense.
