The six-part prompt formula
Write one or two sentences that cover these elements, roughly in this order:
- 1. Subject - who or what, with 2-3 visual details. "A teenage skater in a baggy green hoodie."
- 2. Action - one main movement and its speed. "Slowly rolls down an empty street."
- 3. Setting - place and time. "Suburban hill at sunset."
- 4. Camera - shot size and movement. "Low tracking shot beside the board."
- 5. Light - source and mood. "Warm backlight, long shadows."
- 6. Style - optional look. "Shot on 16mm film, slight grain."
Put together: "A teenage skater in a baggy green hoodie slowly rolls down an empty suburban hill at sunset, low tracking shot beside the board, warm backlight and long shadows, 16mm film grain."
Weak prompts rewritten
- Weak: "beautiful ocean, 4k, cinematic, amazing" Strong: "Turquoise waves roll onto a white-sand beach, aerial shot slowly moving along the shoreline, midday sun, clear water showing the reef below."
- Weak: "man running" Strong: "A middle-aged jogger in a grey tracksuit runs along a foggy river path at dawn, camera tracks from the side, breath visible in the cold air."
- Weak: "fantasy scene with dragons and castles and knights and magic" Strong: "A black dragon lands on a castle tower at dusk, wings folding, embers drifting, wide shot from the courtyard below."
The pattern: replace adjectives with things the camera can actually see, and reduce many actions to one. Notice too that each strong version names a time of day - light is one of the cheapest ways to change the whole mood of a clip.

Create a video Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Too many actions. A 5-second clip can't show a character waking, dressing and leaving. Pick the most visual moment.
- Tag soup. "cinematic, 8k, masterpiece" adds little. Describe the lens, light and movement instead.
- Asking for text. Signs, captions and logos usually come out garbled. Add text later in an editor.
- Contradictions. "Static shot, camera flies through the city" confuses the model.
- Ignoring the frame. A wide landscape in a 9:16 frame looks cramped. Choose the aspect preset first; see the vertical video generator page for tall framing.
- Negative phrasing. "No people" can sometimes add people. Describe what you do want: "an empty street".
Model-specific notes
On generatorvideo.ai you choose a mode per clip. Our generator does well with clear, detailed descriptions - longer prompts written as full sentences tend to help, and you can describe the sound you want too. Turbo mode is fastest; Pro mode is a bit slower but handles realistic people, texture, lighting and complex motion better. A sensible habit: test a prompt on Turbo, fix the wording, then render the final on Pro.
If your prompt is only a few words, the prompt enhancer rewrites it using this same structure. And for animating a photo, prompts work differently - see image to video prompts.
A practice routine
Take one idea and generate it three times, changing one element each round: first the camera, then the light, then the action speed. Compare the clips side by side. Ten minutes of this teaches more than any list. Cost: 3 clips = $3, or free if they are your first three. For inspiration, see our best AI video prompts, then write your own.
What is a text to video prompt?
It is the written description an AI video model turns into a clip: subject, action, setting, camera, light and style.
How long should a text to video prompt be?
One or two full sentences, typically 25-60 words. Enough detail to be specific, not so much that it contradicts itself.
Should I use keywords or sentences?
Sentences. Video models generally respond better to natural descriptions than to comma-separated tags.
Why does my AI video ignore part of the prompt?
Usually because there is too much in it. Reduce to one subject and one action, and make the camera direction explicit.
Can AI write prompts for me?
Yes. Our prompt enhancer expands a short idea into a detailed prompt that you can edit before generating.
